As a parent, you'll be greeted with joy and laughter every day when you care for your toddler, but there's an overwhelming sense of responsibility that comes along with it. The time has come to send them off to childcare when they're ready.
My son is currently in childcare two days a week, and I can say, I hate drop-offs! On the first day, he was incredibly upset, which made me cry on my way home. But slowly, things are getting easier.
Here's what you can do to reduce separation anxiety in young preschoolers:
Expln what they'll be doing during their day: Today you're going to have fun with your friends and play in the big sand pit!
Keep drop-offs short and sweet. Hand over to a teacher who will likely distract them with engaging activities. In my daycare center, the mn teacher takes him outside to see the guinea pigs quickly.
Avoid prolonged goodbyes. Even if it's hard watching them upset as you leave, a drawn-out goodbye only worsens everyone's feelings.
Have a transition toy for your child - this helps them settle.
Mntn confidence in yourself and remn calm and relaxed. If you're feeling anxious about leaving them behind, try not to show it.
Don't sneak away without saying goodbye.
Trust the childcare staff - they deal with kids all day and know how to distract or soothe an upset child. They'll take care of your little one when you can't be there.
Keep to a consistent routine for the first few weeks.
Here are more insights into separation anxiety:
Most research suggests that separation anxiety peaks around 15-18 months of age, with my son being about half a month away from this milestone.
Not every child experiences separation anxiety - it depends on their temperament and environment as well as your behavior towards them.
On a positive note, the existence of separation anxiety indicates your child has reached another developmental milestone! They now understand that you'll still be around even when they can't see you!
that separation anxiety is normal development. Parents need to remn calm and recognize it will pass; there's also an end to those sleepless nights.
The next developmental stage involves forming reciprocal relationships, thanks to rapid brn and language development happening from 18 months to about three years old.
These skills lead to a better understanding of others' perspectives and more effective communication.
help you navigate this challenging time as a parent and understand the natural process your child is going through.
