As leaders in the industry, we are dedicated to addressing and resolving ongoing terminology issues that persist despite our efforts. A crucial one involves the distinction between Newborn Care Specialists NCS and Baby Nurses.
The International Nanny Association INA, a recognized authority within our field since 2007, introduced 'Newborn Care Specialist' as an official term during a pivotal meeting with industry pioneers in Washington DC. This meeting comprised esteemed figures such as the current INA board members, who collectively decided on this unified professional term for a distinct segment of childcare professionals.
The term 'Newborn Care Specialist', however, continues to be confused with its predecessor, 'Baby Nurse'. This issue requires immediate attention not only because of the industry's standardization but also due to potential legal ramifications.
To reiterate, the INA has guidelines that establish professionalism among NCSs through setting a formal definition at the annual conference since 2011 and promoting comprehensive trning modules. In addition, our organization is currently working on implementing basic skills assessments and credentialing exams for NCSs.
The recognition of NCS professionals goes beyond just the industry's acknowledgment; it exts to their role in the first few weeks following a baby’s birth. The term 'Baby Nurse', on the other hand, was replaced by 'Nanny' when referring to childcare providers due to the professional disapproval associated with the former term.
We are now collectively seeking to establish 'Newborn Care Specialist' as an industry standard not just for professional but also legal purposes. To achieve this goal, we must collaborate and diligently educate others about its precise meaning, trning requirements, responsibilities, and industry standards.
Our mission is to provide a unified front with clients, caregivers, and the public through collective effort. This initiative requires our active participation in forums where both agencies and caregivers convene.
