Threeof Nanny Care: A Guide for Nannies and Families
By Michelle LaRowe of Morningside Nannies and Nanny Trning
When considering the type of position a nanny may excel in, it is crucial that she or he takes into account which model of nanny care best aligns with her approach to childcare, personal style, and level of comfort working within different family structures.
There are three primaryof nanny care: custodial care, coordinated care, and supervisory care. Each model defines the role the nanny plays in a child's life when their parents are absent.
In the custodial care model, the nanny is responsible for meeting children's physical and emotional needs during parental absence. Parents provide specific guidance on how to manage their children's day-to-day activities, without allowing input into scheduling or decisions about childrearing practices and parenting philosophies from the nanny side.
The coordinated care model views the nanny as a professional team member in rsing children. Full-charge nannies who engage in this model are given freedom to make decisions regarding the children's activities and outings based on their own expertise and insights. These nannies have a voice when it comes to childrearing practices and parenting philosophies.
The surrogate care model designates the nanny as the primary caregiver for children, especially for parents who frequently travel. Nannies in this position might experience limited interaction with employers and are left to make all decisions about childcare responsibilities without much consultation or oversight from the family.
It's essential that a nanny understands which model aligns best with her approach to child welfare, personal style, and comfort level before taking on any role. For instance, if a nanny enjoys planning children’s activities, she would not thrive in an environment where parental micromanagement is expected.
Knowing these distinctions helps nannies identify positions where they can perform their best naturally by matching roles with theof care families seek.
