The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted dly life, placing unprecedented challenges on families worldwide. This study delve into the experiences and insights of parents and their young children aged four to six years in navigating these tumultuous times.
A qualitative approach was adopted using semi-structured interviews with 22 parent-participants 10 mothers and 12 fathers from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, along with nine child participants ranging from ages four to six. The interviews were conducted via online platforms for accessibility during the pandemic period. Thematic analysis guided the data interpretation process.
Adjustments in Dly Life: Participants highlighted significant changes in their routines due to remote work arrangements and home-based childcare needs, necessitating reorganization of dly schedules.
Increased Household Responsibilities: Parents reported taking on additional domestic tasks as a result of school closures and the necessity of managing online learning for children simultaneously.
Conflict Resolution within Families: The confinement led to heightened tensions among family members due to shared living spaces and limited personal space, which required strategies for conflict resolution and mntning harmonious relationships.
Coping Mechanisms and Adaptation Strategies:
Parents employed various coping mechanisms such as mindfulness practices, engaging in creative activities with their children, and seeking support through online communities or professional counseling services.
Children developed resilience through play-based learning, storytelling, and imaginative games that helped them process their emotions and adapt to the new realities.
The exploration of these themes was enriched by applying Family Systems Theory and the Family Stress Model.
Family Systems Theory posits that families are dynamic systems that interact with one another in a continuous cycle. This framework elucidates how individual experiences within the family unit can be interconnected, influencing each member's perceptions and behaviors during crises such as pandemics.
The Family Stress Model, on the other hand, emphasizes how stressors external to the family such as pandemic-induced lockdowns impact family relationships and functioning internally. It underscores the need for resilience-building strategies within families to cope with stressful events.
By integrating these theoretical lenses, the study provide a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted challenges encountered by parents and young children during the COVID-19 outbreak. This comprehensive analysis not only highlights the dynamics at play within family units but also underscores potential avenues for support and intervention that can enhance resilience in times of crisis.
The findings suggest a need for targeted resources and interventions tlored to the unique needs of families with young children during pandemics. These could include digital platforms offering educational content, mental health support services, and strategies for conflict resolution and stress management within households. The insights gned from this study can contribute to informing policy recommations and practical support measures med at safeguarding family well-being during future crises.
The authors would like to ext their gratitude to the participants for sharing their experiences and providing valuable insights. Additionally, the support of research institutions and funding bodies is acknowledged.
