At approximately twenty-seven weeks pregnant, you're experiencing a new phase of pregnancy where your baby's development becomes more noticeable and exciting. The fetus is steadily growing both in size and complexity.
Body:
In this week of pregnancy, your baby is about the size of an avocado and measures around 13 inches 33 cm from head to heel. Weighing roughly 2.5 pounds about a pound lighter than the weight of a tennis ball, the baby's growth rate is increasing rapidly.
The baby's muscles are getting stronger, allowing for more movement inside your womb. Though you might not feel this increased activity much yet, it may become more noticeable soon as space becomes increasingly limited and your baby grows. By now, your baby can kick, stretch their arms and legs, and even practice swallowing some amniotic fluid.
The skin of your baby is mostly transparent due to the high amount of fluids surrounding them. The cuticles are well developed but they don't have a full layer of fat yet. This means that if you were able to see through their skin, you would notice veins that run beneath it.
The eyes of the fetus start to develop sensitivity to light around this time and they can even detect different wavelengths! Though unable to fully open or close them yet due to the lack of eyelids, their eyes are starting to work like tiny cameras inside your baby's head.
Your baby is also learning how to coordinate swallowing movements for amniotic fluid and getting ready for that first breath outside when born. The kidneys have begun processing waste products into urine which they eliminate into the amniotic fluid.
The fetus is developing a sense of touch through their skin, particularly in areas like the palm and sole of the foot where tiny sensory organs called papillae develop. This means your baby can feel sensations through the mother's skin if you happen to have light contact during touch, massage or skin-to-skin contact.
By this stage, your body continues adjusting to accommodate your growing baby. You might notice changes like:
1 Increased Size: Your belly grows larger and rounder as your uterus expands to support the baby.
2 Varicose veins: These veins in your legs become more visible due to increased pressure on blood flow from the fetus's weight.
3 Weight gn: Most pregnant women experience an accelerated rate of weight gn, usually about 1-2 pounds per week.
Embrace this exciting phase of pregnancy as you continue supporting your baby's growth and development. Don't forget to visit your healthcare provider for regular prenatal check-ups, to ensure both you and the baby are on track for a healthy delivery. Listen to your body, take care of yourself, and enjoy these moments of motherhood.
